NHS dentist in Oxford providing affordable treatments

With the constant news about the lack of public funding and austerity measures, you’d be forgiven for believing you couldn’t receive dental treatment on the NHS. Actually, the opposite is true; anyone is entitled to NHS dental care, saving you money and making caring for your oral health affordable.

At Studental, an up-to-date, modern NHS dentist in Oxford, we offer services to students and local residents alike. Since not all treatments are available on the NHS, it is good to have more information on what is included. Here is a quick glance guide on what you need to know about NHS dental care.

NHS Dentist in OxfordWhat treatments are allowed on the NHS?

All aspects of preventive treatment, including 6-monthly hygiene appointments, are available on the NHS. Ensuring you receive everyday dental services is essential for long-term oral health. Your NHS dentist in Oxford will professionally descale your teeth, check your gums for inflammation and treat any issues that are arising. They will also check for decay; if you require a filling, this is covered by the NHS. Cosmetic fillings such as tooth-coloured or ‘white’ fillings are not covered.

If you need more invasive procedures such as root canals, this is allowable, as is any restorative treatment of teeth that would be otherwise lost. If you want cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening, veneers and other types of treatments that adjust the aesthetic of your smile, the NHS will not cover this. If you would like these treatments, we do offer a range of financial services that may help you access them with affordable payment plans.

How NHS dental costs are charged

The NHS uses a banding system: basic treatments sit in one band and more extensive treatments are in others.

Band 1

This band includes all our basic treatments such as hygiene appointments, diagnosis including x-rays, and should you need emergency care, your initial appointment plus an additional appointment, is included in one charge.

Band 2

Band 1 plus any additional work required, such as root canals and fillings.

Band 3

This band gives you access to all the above work plus dentures, crowns and bridges.

Since charges do vary, please contact us for cost details or to make an appointment.

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

We would like to inform you that due to the COVID-19 outbreak we are currently unable to work as normal following the latest government guidelines.

This is not a decision we have taken lightly but we feel it is our responsibility to protect you, our valued patients, our team and our families. We have taken the difficult decision to cancel all routine exams, treatments and hygiene appointments.

Please do not arrive at the practice unannounced.

We will be maintaining a telephone service for advice and booking emergency appointments. Dental emergencies include:

  • Severe pain for over 48 hours
  • Facial Swelling
  • Trauma or uncontrolled bleeding

We understand this is inconvenient and it may mean the treatment timelines are extended. We will be able to reconvene normal service once it is safe to do so. If your appointment needs to be postponed, one of the team will be in touch.
